Location of Mua caves Ninh Binh

The Mua Caves are located in Ninh Binh Province, Vietnam. Specifically, they can be found at the foot of Mua Mountain within the Tam Coc area, which is part of the larger Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex. This area is approximately 90 kilometers south of Hanoi. Mua Caves offer a spectacular view of the surrounding countryside, including limestone karsts and rice paddies, after climbing about 500 steps to reach the top of Mua Mountain. The location is a popular spot for tourists seeking both adventure and a glimpse into the natural beauty and rural life of northern Vietnam.

Entrance fee to Ninh Binh Dancing Cave

As of my last update in April 2023, the entrance fee to the Mua Cave (Hang Múa), often referred to as the “Dancing Cave” in Ninh Binh, was around 100,000 VND per person. However, entrance fees can vary based on the time of year and other factors. It’s always a good idea to check the most current information or contact local tourism offices or your accommodation in Ninh Binh for the latest details on entrance fees and opening hours before planning your visit.

Fascinating History

When mentioning Ninh Bình in general and Hang Múa in particular, one thing that comes to mind for the Vietnamese is that this place was once the Capital of Vietnam. Hence, many destinations in Ninh Bình could have been restricted to the Royal family only.

Legend has it: During the first Viet – Mongol war, the Trần royal family moved from Thăng Long (the capital of Vietnam at the time, now Hanoi) to Ninh Bình, and Hang Múa was chosen as a recreational spot. When the king needed entertainment, several beautiful dancers would come there to perform. This is why Hang Múa got its name as mentioned above, literally meaning ‘Dance Cave’.

Missing out on the beauty of the King’s playground on a beautiful day seems like not a good idea, right?

Cultural Beauty

Hang Múa, located beneath Múa Mountain, is described by locals as “a giant bell turned upside down”. The cave spans about 800 square meters. From the foot of the mountain, several white stone steps leading to the top resemble a mini version of the “Great Wall of China”. On both sides of this “Great Wall” are exquisitely carved dragon and phoenix stones, believed to be from the Trần era as they accurately reflect the artistic spirit of this dynasty.

Unlike other tourist sites in Ninh Bình, Hang Múa offers a culturally rich and peaceful beauty. Although this area was developed relatively early compared to other Vietnamese tourist spots, its natural beauty has been preserved. Thanks to the local government’s decision on sustainable tourism development, the tourist services here are well-organized, and the locals behave well, with rare instances of fights or scams observed.

For tourists wanting to experience the royal feeling, there are music programs that recreate dance scenes from the Trần era. If tourists wish to enjoy these performances, they should inquire in advance with the management of Hang to arrange the timing correctly.

“Good for Health” (yes, you read it right, “Good for Health”)

There are two reasons why visiting Hang Múa is a “healthy” decision.

First, the air at this destination is very fresh and clean. Clearly, in this busy modern life, sometimes clean air is the silver bullet to “erase” all the stress and pressure of humans. Visiting Hang Múa, tourists have the chance to temporarily forget their busy lives and just focus on the spectacular scenery there.

Second, the natural beauty here is not for free, you have to “do something” to enjoy it. As many tourists have confirmed, the most special part of the experience at Hang Múa is enjoying the area’s nature from a viewpoint at the mountain’s peak. However, before one can enjoy this scenery, they must conquer the “Vietnamese Great Wall”, meaning they will have to climb nearly 500 white stone steps to the peak. These white stone steps, connecting the top and bottom of the mountain, resemble a path created by God leading to the divine world. Although initially, this may seem like a tiring challenge, it is actually “the sweetest mountain climbing challenge” as the majestic scenery observed while climbing these steps will undoubtedly make it worthwhile.

Things to do to enrich your trip to Mua Caves Ninh Binh

Climbing to the top of Ngoa Long Mountain

A hike to the summit of Ngoa Long Mountain will uncover several picturesque spots overlooking the winding Ngo Dong River, vibrant green rice fields, and distant karst limestone mountains.

Halfway up, hikers will encounter a fork in the path, with the left leading to the statue of the Bodhisattva Quan The Am, and the right leading to a small temple.

For a panoramic view, follow the right path to the first viewpoint, where visitors can overlook the rugged path down the mountain to the Ngo Dong River. Continue a bit further to reach the second viewpoint atop Ngoa Long Mountain.

Known locally as “dragon mountain,” the highest viewpoint is nicknamed for the intricately designed dragon perched on the mountain’s side.

Embark on a captivating photo journey at the magical tower

Climbing nearly 500 steps to the summit offers an exciting opportunity to discover the secrets of this unique tower. Ascending to Mua Cave’s high podium is a challenging slope, taking about 25 to 45 minutes to complete, depending on your physical stamina.

Upon reaching the mountain’s peak, a magnificent sight awaits – the superior tower within Mua Cave Vietnam, distinguished by Vietnam’s traditional and refined design. Admire the spectacular panorama from this advantageous high position, where the clear blue sky meets the majestic undulating mountains, creating an inspiring scene that will leave an indelible impression.

Vietnam’s tropical climate provides the perfect environment for lotuses to thrive. Therefore, if you visit Ninh Binh from May to July – the blooming season – you’ll have the chance to see and photograph the share-worthy lotus flowers.

The lotus pond near Mua Cave Vietnam is one of the town’s largest lotus gardens. The lotus flowers bloom in the morning, so early risers can see them at their most beautiful at dawn. Cross the pond on a simple wooden bridge, and if you wish to get closer and admire the flowers, you can take a boat and pick some.

Besides the lotus pond, there are many other notable attractions near Mua Cave in Ninh Binh, such as the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex, Tam Coc Town, Bich Dong Pagoda, and the ancient capital of Hoa Lu.

In the summer, the ideal time to visit the Mua Cave viewpoint is to admire the panoramic view of the ripe rice fields. But don’t worry, you will fully enjoy the peaceful and majestic beauty of Ninh Binh.

As you can see, the best time to view Mua Cave is when Vietnamese farmers are planting rice, then both the green and golden rice fields immediately attract you.

This period starts from May to July annually. If it is a sunny day then, you will have a memorable day trip to Mua Cave.

However, sometimes it’s too hot, and you may feel tired, affecting your mood. A cool day is a good choice to visit Ninh Binh, with watching the sunset or sunrise being activities you should do.

Another tip is to avoid the rainy season due to the inconvenience of moving. Moreover, the overcast sky prevents us from taking beautiful photos.

Above all, your schedule or preferences are the most important things determining when you should visit Mua Cave.

Extra notes when traveling to Mua caves

  • After leaving Mua Cave, wandering around the surrounding area to enjoy the atmosphere of the Vietnamese countryside with its “fragrance” and unique scenery is definitely a good idea!
  • Since the Mua Cave complex is a mountainous area, sometimes you may have to traverse some dangerous paths with jagged rocks or very slippery sections. Therefore, wearing flip-flops is not recommended as they could cause injury to tourists (or damage to your beloved phone!)
  • As you will have to climb to the top of Mua Mountain to fully appreciate the beauty of this complex, sports shoes and clothing are highly recommended. Moreover, remember to bring water in case you feel tired after the “mountain climbing challenge.”
  • Visiting Mua Cave early in the morning or late in the afternoon allows you to avoid congestion in the crowd of tourists and enjoy the pristine sunrise or sunset.
  • The entrance fee includes parking, so you can use your own means of transport until you reach the complex’s gate. You should not park before reaching the gate as it not only costs money but also wastes time walking to the complex’s entrance.
